National Fire Prevention Week Is Coming…Are You Ready?

Did you know…65% of home fire deaths occurred in homes without a fire alarm or in homes with alarms that were inoperable? Yikes! You can bet I’ll add “check & test fire alarms in the house” on my “Honey-Do” list.

The National Fire Prevention Association’s (NFPA) official theme for Fire Prevention Week is: “Smoke Alarms: A Sound You Can Live With!” This year’s campaign is from 3-9 October 2010. You can expect your children to learn a little bit about this event in their schools, but what about at home? Part of being organized is being prepared. Check out the NFPA’s website to learn more about this event and how to get your entire family involved. They’ve got some great checklists and videos to help you out.

At the very least, I recommend you:

1. Create a fire response plan for you and your family and make sure you rehearse it together.

Get updates in your inbox "automagically." No spam ever...spam is clutter!

2. Install fire alarms for each bedroom, main hallways, living areas, attic and basement. And be sure to test them.

3. Purchase and install fire extinguishers in your home and learn how to use them effectively.

Please be safe!
