Here’s an interesting statistic: Home storage products have become a $4.36 billion industry. That was back in 2004 according to Newsweek magazine…I can only imagine what it is today! It seems we just don’t have enough space. Or maybe we do. You just might be able to find some hidden pockets of storage you didn’t know you had. Just think outside the box…or rather, inside the box. Specifically I’m talking about finding potential storage space in places like under a stairwell, inside wall columns, under window seats, and in between walls. Take a look at some of the hidden pockets of storage my husband and I found and created in our modest home:
Other side of kitchen entry...notice the electrical outlet to charge our phones. These column cubbies were inspired by the cluttered kitchen counter that was driving me crazy (thanks, babe)!
Magazine cubbie that fits inbetween wall studs. It's recessed in the wall about 3 inches and only sticks out about 1.5 inches.
We weren't using the bar between the kitchen and dining room...so we built cubbies that now hold our electronics we're charging up (instead of being on display in a mangled mess on the counter).
After installing a pedestal sink in our hall bath, we lost some storage space...but my husband found a little pocket in the wall to hold our toilet paper.
I know, I know…I’m pretty darn lucky to have such a talented do-it-your-selfer husband. We did all of these projects ourselves but we were very careful about not damaging anything structural. If you think you’ve got some hidden storage space, it might be worth getting a handyman (person?) to see where you may be able to take advantage of some unused space. Instead of buying furniture and home storage products that take up more floor space, maybe you could tap into some hidden potential.

Hey Vanessa!
This is a great blog! I think this article would be a great feature on a home-focused blog that just came online. They are a compendium of Home-related posts and tutorials and this post of yours seems to be a great one to post on there and generate more traffic to your blog from what may be a slightly different demographic than you already have.
The blog is called Offbeat Home and can be found at offbeathome.com. It is a sister site to the wildly popular Offbeat Bride and Offbeat Mama. They’ve featured posts from other bloggers tons of times and alway s give links and credit and will even only post a preview so that their users must go to your blog to read the post!
I would like to conclude by mentioning that I am not affiliated with Offbeat Home in any way, I am just a fan of both you and them and this post made me think of the type of content I love to see on there.
Thanks a lot!
